Last January, Gov. Cuomo established the Medicaid Redesign Team, which is a group tasked to reform New York’s Medicaid system and reduce costs. This year, New York Medicaid provided coverage to additional 140,000 residents without reducing benefits and came in under budget due to MRT initiatives, according to the release.
Some of the initiatives included shifting less severe patients from the emergency room and hospital to more appropriate ambulatory and primary care settings, and shifting Medicaid beneficiaries into Medicaid managed care plans.
Overall, Gov. Cuomo expects the MRT initiatives will save the New York Medicaid program $34.3 billion over the next five years.
