The NCSL estimates at least 34 states will delve into Medicaid and other state healthcare concerns this year, as it relates to their budgets. Maine, New Mexico and Oklahoma, for example, have already begun discussions of their Medicaid programs, and many states still must decide if they want to expand Medicaid under the healthcare reform law.
Alabama officials told the NCSL that Medicaid accounts for almost 60 percent of its total general fund expenditures, and Georgia said its Medicaid expenditures are also surpassing projections, although its legislature is looking at other measures to rein in spending, such as renewing the Medicaid provider tax.
