New Mexico's new law shoots for clarity in hospital bills

New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez (R) has signed legislation that aims to make hospital prices and quality information more readily available to state residents, according to a KRQE report.

Up until now, there was not a clear database for New Mexicans to get necessary information about hospital billing and costs, according to the report. However, the intention with the new law is to make it easier to get such information.

Under the new law, the New Mexico Department of Health will be able to release hospital-specific data — something it previously could not do, according to the report. The legislation also creates a committee that determines the best way to present information to residents.

Additionally, there will be a website with hospital cost and quality information that can be accessed from the Sunshine Portal, New Mexico's government transparency portal, according to the report.

New Mexico will become the 15th state with a healthcare transparency website.
