Hospitals in Washoe County and Carson City lost a combined $29.3 million, while hospitals in Clark County posted cumulative losses of $45.7 million, according to the report.

Rural hospitals throughout the state faired the best, reporting a combined $52.7 million profit. However, Northeastern Nevada Regional Hospital, a rural hospital in Elko, contributed most toward the total due to high rates of paying patients and a gold-mining boom. The report also found that for-profit hospitals are having more financial success than non-profits.

Overall, Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the country at 12.6 percent and also has the highest home foreclosure rate.
