Moody’s downgrades Pennsylvania system to ‘Caa3’ after missed bond payments

Meadowbrook, Pa.-based Redeemer Health’s credit rating was downgraded to “Caa3” from “B1” on Oct. 9 after the system missed scheduled debt service payments.

Moody’s tied the downgrade to the missed payments and the acceleration of about $87 million in obligations under the system’s master indenture. The ratings agency said the default points to elevated governance risk and leaves the system’s financial flexibility and ability to resolve the default uncertain.

Redeemer reported about $128 million in unrestricted cash and investments as of March 31, including about $75 million at the obligated group. Moody’s said the later default suggests a material decline in financial flexibility or limits on available liquidity. The agency also cited operating losses, recent management turnover and limited visibility into restructuring plans.

Redeemer disclosed the default Oct. 8 through the Electronic Municipal Market Access system. Payments were due Sept. 1 and Oct. 1, a spokesperson said in a statement to Becker’s.

The default follows a late-September leadership overhaul. Redeemer named Jim Logue interim CEO and brought back former CFO Michael Keen after CEO Greg Wozniak exited and CFO Kim Cummings resigned, effective Sept. 30. Mr. Wozniak had led the system since July 2024.

The system’s rating remains under review for further downgrade.
