Within that figure was $622.8 million in charity care, which was 404 percent higher since 2004.
The MHA collected data from 129 hospitals. Here are other key findings from its report:
• In 2011, Missouri hospitals provided more than $3 billion in community benefits. This included charity care, bad debt, donations, education of health professionals, medical clinic services and unpaid costs of treating Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries.
• There are almost 120,000 full-time-equivalent employees in Missouri’s hospitals.
• Capital investments in 2011 totaled $1.4 billion.
