Minnesota hospitals see operating margin fall 29% in 2016

Twenty-eight Minnesota hospitals reported negative operating margins in 2016, up from 21 the year prior, according to a report from the Minnesota Hospital Association.

In its second annual report, MHA examined its members' financial health by reviewing hospitals' and health systems' audited financial statements. MHA comprises 142 of the state's 144 hospitals.

Overall, Minnesota hospitals saw operating margins decline last year. Average operating margin fell to 1.7 percent in 2016, compared to 2.4 percent in 2015. MHA said the change reflects increasing uncompensated care and a growing uninsured population.
