Minnesota Children’s Hospital to Pay for Inappropriate Medicaid Exemption

Amplatz Children’s Hospital, part of the University of Minnesota and Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, will have to reimburse the state millions after the hospital found out it did not qualify for a Medicaid cut exemption, according to a KSTP report.

In 2011, the Minnesota Department of Human Services exempted Amplatz from Medicaid cuts after the state initiated a program to reduce costs. Hospital Medicaid rates were cut 10 percent, but DHS said Amplatz didn’t have to follow the program since it is a children’s hospital.

KSTP reported DHS has sent a letter to Amplatz officials, telling them the exemption was not valid because it is not a standalone children’s hospital and does not treat enough low-income families. The amount of money Amplatz will have to pay back to the state was not yet determined, according to the report.
