Michigan church relieves more than $2.2M in medical debt

Okemos, Mich.-based Okemos Community Church relieved more than $2.2 in long-term medical debt for Michigan families, CBS affiliate WLNS reported July 11.

The debt relief will help 3,660 families, according to the report. 

The church collected funds during Lent and Easter Sunday, according to the report. RIP Medical Debt, a nonprofit that purchases and forgives medical debt for pennies on the dollar, took the money raised by the church and implemented the debt relief project. 

The project focused on households making less than twice the poverty level or those whose medical debt is greater than 5 percent of the household income, according to the report.
