Medicare Advantage accounts for rising share of inpatient days

Medicare Advantage accounted for around 1 in 4 inpatient hospitals days in 2022, according to a report from KFF published July 23.

In 2022, 23% of inpatient hospital days were attributable to Medicare Advantage, up from 13% in 2015. 

Here are three trends to note: 

  1. In 2022, 30% of hospitals had more Medicare Advantage inpatient days than traditional Medicare. In 2015, just 5% of hospitals had more MA days than traditional Medicare days. 
  2. Traditional Medicare accounted for 25% of hospitals inpatient days in 2022. 
  3. In rural and micropolitan counties, the share of inpatient days from Medicare Advantage enrollees doubled between 2015 and 2022.
