Houston-based University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center has paused hiring for new administrative positions and is prioritizing the hiring of direct patient care roles.
Here are five things to know:
1. The organization remains in a strong financial position and is taking steps to ensure budgets for the fiscal year ending Aug. 31 are met, according to an MD Anderson statement shared with Becker’s on April 28.
2. Research positions funded by external grants and contracts are still being considered.
3. MD Anderson is also cutting back on nonessential spending after reporting an operating loss of $43 million through March, which was $18.3 million below projections, according to an April 17 internal email from President Peter Pisters, MD, the Houston Chronicle reported April 28.
4. The economic climate, including uncertainty around tariffs raising medication prices, prompted the changes, Dr. Pisters told the newspaper.
5. Several other health systems, including Renton, Wash.-based Providence and San Francisco-based UCSF Health, have also recently paused hiring for some roles.
