Indiana Sen. Dennis Kruse (R) has written a bill that would allow hospitals to establish their own police departments.

Under the bill, hospital boards would have the right to appoint hospital police officers and prescribe them duties and direction for their conduct. They’d also have the ability to prescribe these officers distinctive uniforms and emergency vehicles.

Police officers would have “general police powers,” including power of arrest, on any property owned, leased or occupied by the hospital.

The bill applies to the governing boards of county hospitals, municipal hospitals, private hospitals and the Health & Hospital Corporation of Marion County in Indianapolis.

The bill passed a Senate committee unanimously last week, according to a Fox59 report. It could be heard by the full Senate later this month.
