Kaiser Permanente plans to cut 52 California positions, most tied to its Educational Theatre outreach initiative, which uses arts-based learning to promote health and wellness.

In a statement to Becker’s on Jan. 24, the Oakland, Calif.-based health system described the move as part of a broader shift for the program.

“Educational Theatre has been an important component of our Thriving Schools initiative for many years, and we are continuing this great work,” Kaiser said in a statement to Becker’s on Jan. 24. “What will be different in 2025 and beyond is that we will be working with a community organization to run the program, rather than doing it all in house.

“This change will help us continue to support schools, students, educators and districts across our footprint, and help address the growing national demand from our schools for in-person programs.”

The affected positions are in Los Angeles, Oakland, Pleasanton, Sun Valley, Corona, San Mateo and San Jose, with an effective date of March 22, according to WARN notices filed Jan. 22 with the state.

Kaiser said it is committed to helping affected workers transition into other roles within the health system or, as appropriate, will provide severance, career support and outplacement services.

Kaiser, which comprises Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and its subsidiaries, and the Permanente Medical Groups, employs about 223,800 people total.
