Infographic: The Cost of Avoidable Admissions

Potentially avoidable admissions make up 10 to 14 percent of all admissions for most hospitals, according to a new infographic from Objective Health.

Avoidable admissions equate to $9.5 million in annual "at risk" profit for an average 300-bed hospital. Here is the breakdown, by the top five avoidable conditions, of that $9.5 million:

• Congestive heart failure: 30 percent
• Bacterial pneumonia: 24 percent
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or asthma in older adults: 13 percent
• Urinary tract infection: 10 percent
• Diabetes with short-term complications: 9 percent
