In Iowa, Mercy to close birthing unit in West Des Moines hospital

Mercy Medical Center announced Wednesday it will close a 15-bed birthing unit at its hospital in West Des Moines, Iowa, The Des Moines Register reported.

For the past year, the unit at Mercy West Lakes averaged less than one birth a day. In 2015, the unit saw 329 births, compared to the downtown hospital’s 4,493. All obstetrics services will be transferred to a larger downtown medical center by Aug. 1, according to the Register.

The unit will eventually be used for services like joint replacement or weight-loss surgery.

“The quality of Mercy’s birthing services is well-known in the community, and is a true asset to those we are privileged to serve,” COO Mike Wegner said in a press release. “However, as community needs change over time, so must we. Our goal is always to provide the right care, at the right time and right place.”

A hospital spokesperson said the closure does not reflect a weakened demand in healthcare service for Mercy West Lakes.
