Chicago-based Weiss Memorial Hospital has received a six-month extension from the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board to suspend its services after the hospital closed Aug. 8, 2025, ABC affiliate WLS reported July 21.
The board voted July 21 to allow the hospital, part of Resilience Healthcare, to extend its temporary suspension through Feb. 8, 2027, according to a ruling request from the hospital.
“[The extension] allows the hospital to maintain its position without having to apply for a brand-new Certificate of Need permit to re-establish services later,” the request said.
Weiss Memorial shuttered its emergency department and halted inpatient care after its air-conditioning system failed in June 2025 and forced an evacuation of patients.
CMS then said in late July 2025 that Medicare would stop reimbursing the hospital for inpatient care delivery to patients on or after Aug. 9 due to it being out of compliance with federal standards in respect to nursing services, physician environment and emergency services.
The temporary suspensions cannot exceed one year without board approval under Illinois rules. Weiss Memorial’s original 12-month suspension period was set to expire Aug. 8, 2026.
Weiss Memorial requested additional time to work through a challenge to CMS’ Medicare termination and an appeal of nearly $27.2 million tax liability that the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services said the hospital owes in unpaid state provider bed taxes and penalties. The hospital has appealed and has a pending administrative hearing for late September or October.
Resilience Healthcare also owns West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, Ill., which suspended patient services March 27 due to payroll challenges related to a failed EMR system transition. The system has been working to reopen West Suburban for months, but shared plans to lay off about 500 employees at the hospital, effective Aug. 31.
