Hospital care expenses per day: A state-by-state breakdown

Hospital expenses per adjusted inpatient day vary widely across states and ownership types, with costs ranging from under $700 to more than $6,000 depending on location and whether a facility is government-run, nonprofit or for-profit, according to KFF.

The data below is from the American Hospital Association and represents expenses per adjusted inpatient day in 2024 at community hospitals, which are defined as non-federal, short-term general and specialty hospitals with facilities and services available to the public.

Expenses include all operating and non-operating costs for both inpatient and outpatient care. Inpatient days are adjusted upward to account for outpatient service volume. The figures estimate what hospitals spend to provide a day of inpatient care and do not reflect actual charges to patients or reimbursement rates.
