Researchers from Truven, a company formerly owned by Thompson Reuters, analyzed a sample representing 10 million covered members to trace cost trends in health plans. The company also found inpatient cost rates went up 3.3 percent while the number of inpatient stays per 1,000 dropped 1.7 percent, and outpatient costs grew 2.8 percent.
Small employers were the hardest hit from 2007 to 2011, with a 3.8 percent health plan cost increase compared with the median growth rate of 2.8 percent.
