Flurry of prior authorization reform bills introduced at state level, AMA says

State legislatures have introduced more than 70 prior authorization bills during their current legislative sessions, American Medical Association President Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, said.

The bills have been introduced in 28 states, Dr. Ehrenfeld said in a Jan. 25 transcript of an episode from the organization’s “AMA Update” video series. 

Dr. Ehrenfeld said 17 other states have already adopted comprehensive financial reforms, many of which are based on AMA’s model bills. 

He touted several states’ wins in the past year, including in New Jersey, where Gov. Phil Murphy recently signed a bill that implements mandated turnaround times for prior authorization requests under state-regulated health plans. That legislation also requires that if a prior authorization request is denied, it must be done by a physician who is of the same specialty as the physician who manages the medical condition or disease at hand.
