The LIP provides additional funding to hospitals and other healthcare providers that serve large numbers of low-income and uninsured patients, according to the report. The program was created in 2006 under a federal waiver and is set to expire June 30, 2014.

Mr. Senior told the state House Health Care Appropriations Subcommittee his agency will submit a three-year extension request for the program by Nov. 22 and will request the federal government increase its funding from $1 billion to $3 billion annually, according to the report.
