Cigna and Primary Partners began the arrangement, which aims to improve health, affordability and patient experience, in 2014.

Four key results from its fifth year:

1. Primary Partners has a negative 3.6 percent medical cost trend, meaning substantial savings were achieved.

2. The favorable cost trend is largely attributed to a 36 percent decrease in readmission rates and a 12 percent reduction in inpatient admissions.

3. Advanced imaging costs also decreased 10 percent in the fifth year.  Imaging utilization, including CT scans and MRIs, also decreased 18 percent, which contributed to the medical cost trend.

4. Primary Partners also scored an 88 percent in overall quality performance.

“Cigna and its Care Coordination program team have worked with us to build a true partnership, which allows our providers to lead in quality and value of care delivered to the communities we serve. Partnerships like these are at the heart of what it takes to improve affordable access to care and the health of our patients and communities,” said Shazia Nasir, MD, chair of Primary Partners board.
