Researchers examined readmission rates, inpatient discharge data and nurse staffing ratios in 225 hospitals, encompassing 14,194 registered nurses and 90,459 pediatric patients with common medical and surgical conditions.
Results showed that children treated in hospitals with pediatric staffing ratios of 1:4 or less had significantly lower all-cause 30-day readmission rates. Researchers also found that for every pediatric patient added to a nurse’s workload, the likelihood of readmission went up 11 percent.
