Financial updates from UnitedHealth, Anthem + 3 other health insurers

The following five health insurers recently released their financial statements for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2018:

1. WellCare Health Plans, a managed care payer, reported higher revenue but a dip in net income during the fourth quarter of 2018.

2. Health insurer Centene saw revenue increase in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2018 and ended the year with improved net income.

3. Cigna, which now owns pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts, saw its net income fall in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2018.

4. Anthem ended the fourth quarter of 2018 with $23.3 billion in operating income, up 3.8 percent from $22.4 billion in the same quarter in 2017.

5. Growth in UnitedHealth Group‘s health services business Optum helped the health insurance company beat Wall Street estimates for the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31.
