For their study, researchers assessed quality and financial outcomes for 2,100 patients who were treated within a 20-month period. In addition to an increase in length of stay of approximately 3 days, the researchers discovered adverse drug events can add $2,852-$3,650 to healthcare costs, depending on the severity. If the adverse drug event is “life-threatening,” it could add up to $8,116.
