CMS Announces New Billing Code for New Split Virus Flu Vaccine

CMS recently announced providers should bill for the new split virus, preservative-free, intradermal flu vaccine using a new CPT code, according to an AHA News Now report.

Effective for claims with dates of service on or after May 9, 2011, Medicare will begin paying for CPT code 90654 for the vaccine. CMS has instructed Medicare contractors to hold all institutional claims containing CPT code 90654 beginning May 9, 2011, until their systems are able to accept them for processing, but providers should not hold claims any later than April 2, 2012.
