Flint, Mich.-based Insight Health System is moving forward with plans to reopen Keokuk (Iowa) Area Hospital as a rural emergency hospital.
The opening would be supported by $825,000 in federal funding through the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Healthcare Facilities program, according to a Nov. 5 news release shared with Becker’s.
While grant funds have not been spent yet, Insight awarded the architectural and engineering design contract in October, the release said.
Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health sold Keokuk Area Hospital to Quincy, Ill.-based Blessing Health System in March 2021. The hospital closed in September 2022 and was acquired by Insight in March 2023.
Insight has spent approximately $3.7 million on Keokuk Area Hospital since acquiring the hospital to help maintain the facility, including maintenance staffing, security, insurance, upkeep and utilities. The investment aims to preserve the hospital for future reuse as Insight works to restore its services.
“Insight expects to submit required plans to the state of Iowa for review in 2027,” the release said. “Once approved, there will be a public bidding process for construction. The project will focus on essential building and life-safety improvements needed to support emergency and outpatient services.”
