Children's Hospital to expand onto former Marine Hospital campus

Children's Hospital in New Orleans has proposed a $250 million expansion project that includes construction, renovation and preservation of the historic Marine Hospital building across the street, according to a Times-Picayune report.

Children's purchased the five-story, 184,000-square-foot building and the 17.2-acre campus it sits on in February 2014. The hospital plans to preserve 12 of the existing 18 structures, as well as the campus' many trees.

The first phase of the construction plan includes:

  • Refurbishing several historic buildings
  • Demolishing six other buildings
  • Constructing an 800-space parking garage
  • Building a 267,000-square-foot critical care tower
  • Renovating 50,000 square feet on the hospital's main floor

The first phase alone is expected to take approximately five years to complete. The second phase — which may not begin for another 10 years — includes demolishing Children's current single-story midsection and building a three- or four-story tower in the midsection's place
