The Cayman Islands public hospital system will begin suing patients and businesses that owe healthcare debts to the Health Services Authority, reports Cayman Compass.

The Cayman Islands Health Services Authority — which operates Cayman IslandsHospital in George Town, FaithHospital in StakeBay and three clinics — reported about $90 million in outstanding accounts receivable more than a year old.

In 2010 the hospital system formally vowed not to take legal action to collect medical debts from residents. But the system’s financial duress has forced health officials to reconsider.

HSA CEO Lizzette Yearwood told Cayman Compass the agency plans to enlist local law firms to pursue more recent outstanding patient debts that could be “reasonably” recovered. HSA officials expect to recover about $10 million, according to the article.
