Robert Hale Jr., CEO of Granite Telecommunications, and his wife, Karen, pledged $100 million to two Boston hospitals — $50 million to Children's Hospital of Boston and $50 million to Brigham and Women's Hospital — to enhance patient care, reports The Boston Globe.
The donation is the largest single gift in Brigham and Women's history, and it ties for the largest pledge to Boston Children's Hospital. To honor the donors, Brigham will name its newest, $475 million facility after the Hale family. Additionally, Boston Children's will name their yet-to-be-built 11-story clinical building after the donors.
At Children's, the donation will support a $1 billion expansion project that includes the 11-story tower, new operating rooms, a heart center and a new unit for sick newborns. Brigham has yet to decide how to use the donation.
The Hales have been involved with both hospitals for several years. Ms. Hale serves on Brigham and Women's Cancer Research and Care advisory board, while Mr. Hale serves on the steering committee for Boston Children's Dream, Dare, Deliver campaign, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
"What the Hales are doing with this $100 million donation is really an acknowledgment that Boston is the epicenter of health care and research," Sandra L. Fenwick, CEO of Children's Hospital, told The Globe. "What happens here in these institutions is not just impacting our city and our Commonwealth but being disseminated worldwide."
