Alabama hospital retains Medicare funding

CMS threatened to revoke York, Ala.-based Hill Hospital of Sumter County's Medicare contract Feb. 17. However, a recertification survey found the hospital was again in compliance with federal standards.

Hill Hospital's Medicare contract was at risk following a survey conducted Jan. 22 by Alabama regulators. During their routine investigation, they found multiple deficiencies, including issues related to patient care and proper staffing levels. The state regulators found that the hospital failed to have a physician in the emergency department for multiple days, ranging from 12 hours to 84 consecutive hours at a time. This caused issues with patient care.

The hospital presented a corrective action plan that was approved by CMS. As a result, the termination was rescinded.
