Montgomery, Ala.-based Jackson Hospital might close at the end of October without funding help, NBC affiliate WSFA reported Oct. 1.
The hospital has received approval for its Chapter 11 bankruptcy plan, which allows it to stay open while it restructures debt, but officials told city council members that it does not have enough money in the bank to keep operating beyond the next 30 days, according to the report.
The hospital is asking the city to back a $20 million loan to cover payroll and operating expenses, according to the report. City council has not yet taken action on the request.
Councilman Andrew Szymanski said the hospital is critical to the city, but council also have a responsibility to taxpayers, according to the report. He said they’ve heard multiple proposals throughout the last year and it’s council and the mayor’s job to “make sure this is the right decision for Montgomery.”
