The 21.3 percent dip in profit was exacerbated by Humana’s operating expenses, which were 13.1 percent higher in the first quarter. Humana’s total revenue increased 11.2 percent, from $9.19 billion in the first quarter of 2011 to $10.22 billion.
However, Humana continued to boost its Medicare Advantage membership. Humana had 1,883,800 MA enrollees by the end of March 31, 2012 — a 15 percent jump from the fourth quarter ended Dec. 31, 2011. Those membership numbers included the 62,600 people that were added after Humana’s acquisition of Arcadian Management Services was finalized.
