States were originally tasked with setting up exchange plans by Nov. 16, but now they will have until Feb. 15. The exchanges, a staple of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, will go live Jan. 1, 2014.
States that opt to operate their own exchanges still face a deadline of Nov. 16.
Many GOP governors have rejected taking action on exchanges due to the election. If states do not submit plans on how their exchange will work, the federal government will step in and design in or will help with a state-HHS partnership model.
