Why 2 Virginia health systems bought joint stake to sponsor city's public transit system

VCU Health System and Bon Secours Richmond Health System, both in Richmond, Va., partnered to acquire a joint stake in the city's new public transit system, which will open to riders this summer, VCU Health System announced April 5.

GRTC Pulse is a high-capacity rapid transit system that will stretch across a 7.6-mile route within city limits. Transit officials expect to create additional routes connecting the GRTC Pulse to the Greater Richmond area.

"As the region's largest safety-net provider, we know that reliable transportation plays a key role in creating healthy communities," said Deborah Davis, CEO of VCU Hospitals and Clinics. "We will also use buses and bus stops for community health education, encouraging riders to learn about health screenings and reducing risk factors for conditions such as heart disease, stroke, obesity and diabetes."
