U of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center plans $100M makeover

Towson-based University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center plans to invest $100 million to upgrade its existing facilities, reports The Baltimore Sun.

The hospital's application, which was filed with the Maryland Health Care Commission, calls for more than $60 million in renovations and another $35 million in upgrades to the building's infrastructure.

The project will include renovated operating rooms, upgraded cardiac catheterization laboratories and improved infrastructure, including new boilers and chillers.

St. Joseph officials said the number of operating rooms will be reduced to 11 from 15 if the plan is approved; however, the rooms will be more spacious.

The hospital also plans to add technology to do minimally invasive aortic heart valve replacement.

The state Health Care Commission is expected to review the proposal and make a decision in six to nine months.
