Texas plans to replace Austin State Hospital as part of $300M state plan

Texas health officials plan to replace the 160-year-old Austin State Hospital as part of a $300 million plan to reform the state's psychiatric services, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

The 299-bed hospital, which serves 33 counties for adult patients and 55 counties for children, is the oldest psychiatric facility in the state and replacing it is expected to cost nearly $235 million.

"A strong state psychiatric system is critically important to all Texans. This investment will benefit the state for generations," said Charles Smith, executive commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, according to the Austin American-Statesman. "With this support from state leadership, we can update our facilities and be sure we are providing Texans with the very best mental health care possible."

Travis County's Central Health, Austin Travis County Integral Care and the University of Texas Dell Medical School — all based in Austin — will partner with the state to manage the new hospital.
