Matthew Jenkins, PharmD

Matthew Jenkins is vice president and chief pharmacy officer at VCU Health, where in 2023 he became the academic health system’s first leader to hold the role.

He joined VCU Health from the University of Virginia Health System, where he served as senior director of pharmacy services, and he brings more than a decade of pharmacy leadership experience within academic medical center environments. Since taking on the newly created position, he has expanded VCU Health’s specialty pharmacy program by more than 50%, grown its ambulatory retail pharmacy by more than 30% and doubled its home-delivery services. His emphasis on patient access and transitional care has driven a systemwide medication history initiative and enhanced meds-to-beds programs.

Dr. Jenkins has also worked to support the integrity and performance of the health system’s 340B program and to align pharmacy strategy with the institution’s clinical, education and research missions. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a fellow of the Virginia Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and he holds a certified pharmacy executive leader credential.

Becker’s Hospital Review named him one of its hospital and health system chief pharmacy officers to know in 2025.

He is recognized as a rising leader in health-system pharmacy administration.
