Oregon Health & Sciences creates drug price transparency tool for Epic EHR

Portland-based Oregon Health & Sciences University is implementing a tool within its Epic EHR system that shows the price the patient will have to pay as soon as their clinician writes a prescription, according to a Nov. 14 news release.

The tool automatically factors in information including co-pay, deductibles and need for prior authorization and displays the data in the EHR. The information, which is readily available to pharmacists who fill the prescription, does not typically become available to patients until they fill the prescription.

With the tool, clinicians and patients can quickly in real-time compare the price of the medication with different drugs that produce similar effects.
