36% of hospital administrators struggle with EHR interoperability: 4 things to know

Nearly 36 percent of medical record administrators said it is challenging to exchange patient health records with providers using different EHR platforms, a slight improvement from 41 percent in 2016, according to a recent report by Black Book Research.

In its 2018 inpatient EHR client satisfaction report, Black Book surveyed 3,040 EHR users about their current contracts, purchasing decisions and overall satisfaction.

Here are four things to know.

1. The majority of medical administrators (72 percent) said incoming patient information was not organized in a useful format, up 5 percent from 2017.

2. Roughly 24 percent of administrators said they were unable to use meaningful patient data they received electronically from outside sources not within a siloed EHR system, and 30 percent of hospital-based physicians said they can't trust data they viewed when it was sent from outside providers with a different system.

3. Nearly 22 percent of hospital IT managers said they are exploring alternative EHR vendors in 2019.

4. Over half (62 percent) of hospitals indicated they are not using patient information from outside their EHR because the data is not available in their systems' workflows.
