Man assaults Pennsylvania EMS responder, police officer

A New York City man faces multiple charges after he fought with a first responder and a police officer in Hazleton, Pa., early Sunday morning, according to a Times Leader report.

An EMS worker responded to a call regarding a male in respiratory distress, arrived on the scene and made contact with a 19-year-old man from Bronx, N.Y., who struck the responder in the pelvic area with a closed fist, according to a police report.

State police were called to the residence, where the man struggled with officers and resisted arrest. The man also kicked a Hazleton police officer in the chest and spit in the officer's face while officers prepared to transport him to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in Hazleton to be checked for respiratory issues. Police later determined he was under the influence of alcohol.

The man was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, resisting arrest, harassment, disorderly conduct and purchase, consumption, possession or transportation of liquor or malt or brewed beverages.
