23-year-old man dies by suicide in Texas hospital ER

Police confirmed a 23-year-old man shot himself in the head in the triage area of Abilene, Texas-based Hendrick Medical Center’s emergency room May 23, according to the Abilene Reporter News.

A spokesperson for the Abilene Police Department told the publication the man walked into the hospital’s ER and told a nurse his blood type and that he was an organ donor. He shot himself in the head in the ER waiting area around 8:55 p.m., the spokesperson told the publication.

Hospital staff transferred the man to a treatment room, but pronounced him dead at 9:17 p.m. The spokesperson said people in the waiting area were transferred to another room, and the hospital brought in chaplains to console medical personnel and witnesses of the incident.
