Google forms health advisory panel

Google has created the Consumer Health Advisory Panel, a group of external experts tasked with guiding the company’s development of health-focused technologies.

According to a July 15 news release from Google, the panel includes 12 professionals from fields such as medicine, biomedical research, digital health, behavioral science and sleep health. Their collective expertise is intended to inform Google’s product development and ensure new health features are built on scientific evidence and implemented responsibly.

The company said the panel will help assess the use of technologies such as generative AI for personalized health insights and will work to ensure these tools meet safety standards and regulatory requirements.

Among those joining the advisory panel are:

  • Gary Bennett, PhD, professor of psychology, neuroscience, global health, medicine and nursing, and dean of Trinity College of Arts & Sciences at Duke University (Durham, N.C.). 
  • Jessilyn Dunn, PhD, assistant professor of biomedical engineering and biostatistics and bioinformatics at Duke University. 
  • Susannah Fox, former chief technology officer for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 
  • Michael Grandner, PhD, director of the Sleep and Health Research Program at the University of Arizona (Tucson, Ariz.) and director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Clinic at Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson.
  • Abby King, PhD, professor of epidemiology and population health and professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine (Stanford, Calif.). 
  • Steven Lin, MD, chief of general primary care and founding director of the Healthcare AI Applied Research Team at Stanford University. 
  • Jan Oldenburg, principal at Participatory Health Consulting and a digital health strategist. 
  • Rhonda Patrick, PhD, biomedical scientist and founder of FoundMyFitness, a platform focused on metabolic health, aging and nutrition. 
  • Ryan Rhodes, PhD, professor of exercise science, physical and health education and director of the Behavioural Medicine Laboratory at the University of Victoria (Victoria, British Columbia). 
  • Karandeep Singh, MD, chief health AI officer for UC San Diego Health and associate professor of medicine in biomedical informatics. 
  • Steven Steinhubl, MD, professor of biomedical engineering at Purdue University (West Lafayette, Ind.) and a cardiologist.
