Illinois campaign uses personal testimony to encourage vaccination

"On the Fence," Illinois' latest vaccination campaign, uses testimony from those who experienced vaccine hesitancy as a way to encourage people to get vaccinated, MM+M reported Feb. 1.

Illinois partnered with Schafer Condon Carter and TimeZoneOne, a communications agency, to help combat vaccination hesitancy and COVID-19 misinformation through the campaign.

"This campaign is about bringing the facts to life and following the data and science," said Daniel Thomas, CEO of TimeZoneOne. "This campaign is really targeted around communities that are struggling with disinformation."

Out of 15 percent of U.S. adults who have not received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, half said they were concerned about vaccine side effects. Other concerns surrounded vaccine distrust and government distrust, according to the Household Pulse Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau.

The campaign, which began in January and will release testimonials each month through June, hopes to reach residents who are still undecided about receiving the COVID-19 vaccine.

In Illinois, 66 percent of residents are vaccinated, and that number is continuing to increase, according to the report.
