Fairview starts stripping M Health from its hospitals

Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services has begun installing new exterior signage across its hospitals and clinics, marking the next phase of its systemwide rebranding ahead of the retirement of the M Health Fairview name at the end of 2026.

Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minn., became the first hospital to receive the updated signage, according to an Oct. 19 announcement from the health system.

The rollout will continue through the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, with the refreshed Fairview identity appearing across hospitals, clinics, vehicles and digital channels. The health system is also updating hospital names to create a more consistent identity and help patients navigate its network.

Among the changes, M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center will become Fairview Minneapolis University Hospital, while M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital will become Fairview Masonic Children’s University Hospital.

The transition follows Fairview’s decision to move away from the M Health Fairview identity as part of a restructuring of its relationship with the Minneapolis-based University of Minnesota. In January, the organizations agreed to replace their joint clinical enterprise with an academic affiliation beginning in 2027.

Fairview has positioned the rebrand as an opportunity to reconnect with its history and strengthen recognition of its name across Minnesota.

In a March interview with Becker’s, Chris Lawrence, Fairview’s chief marketing and brand officer, said the organization had spent 18 months involving its more than 34,000 employees in the branding process. He also described a significant investment in updating signage, websites and employee badges, although he did not provide a specific cost.

Mr. Lawrence said in March that Fairview planned to increase external marketing and communications during the fourth quarter of 2026 to prepare patients and communities for the Jan. 1, 2027, switch.

“Our brand should reflect the experience we want people to have with Fairview,” Mr. Lawrence said in the Oct. 19 announcement. “We want patients and families to experience a health system that feels welcoming, connected, and centered around them.”

The health system said its digital transition will include updated social media channels and a new Fairview.org experience. Some patient-facing locations and tools will continue displaying the M Health Fairview identity through the end of 2026.

Fairview said the changes will not affect patient appointments, care teams, access to care or existing services. Its strategic partnership with University of Minnesota Physicians will also continue.

The health system serves approximately 1.2 million patients across Minnesota and Wisconsin.
