Durham, N.C.-based Duke University has launched a digital health innovation center to research how technology can improve healthcare.

The new Duke Center for Computational and Digital Health Innovation will focus on wearable devices, high-performance computing and extended reality such as virtual reality.

“We’re bringing together engineers, basic scientists, clinicians — all together to achieve our mission: to find, track, and treat human disease,” said Amanda Randles, PhD, director of the Duke Center for Computational and Digital Health Innovation, in an April 10 news release. “We aim to revolutionize healthcare by advancing the frontiers of technology.”

Center members have already created augmented reality to help surgeons target parts of a patient’s body, developed holographic visualization technology and head-mounted displays to better understand complex neurological procedures, and used supercomputers to help uncover disease mechanisms and plan for surgeries through immersive simulations.
