Duke Health aims to become leader in 'trustworthy' AI

Michael Pencina, PhD, Duke Health's chief data scientist, says he aims for the health system to be an organization that many come to for guidance when it comes to algorithms, The Chronicle reported Sept. 20.

"I want Duke Health to be synonymous with trustworthy health AI," he told the publication. "When people think about developing or evaluating algorithms, I want them to look at what we develop, come to us for guidance."

Dr. Pencina was appointed to the role on Aug. 29 and is focusing on AI's advancements in healthcare, as well as its concerns, in order to prevent misuse of AI and to ensure ethics are in place prior to its implementation within healthcare.

He currently directs the Durham, N.C.-based health system's Duke AI Health initiative, is seeking to hire a health ethicist in February, and has formed the Algorithm Based Clinical Decision Support Oversight that evaluates whether newly introduced technology is equitable and safe, according to the publication.
