The state said it is including the new requirement for those conducting coronavirus tests, in addition to the collection of race and ethnicity data, to help make healthcare more equitable. The new reporting requirement extends to all communicable diseases.

Despite the existing race and ethnicity data reporting requirement, that information is still missing for about 36 percent of COVID-19 cases, according to the California Department of Public Health.
