The employee experienced identity theft, which led to their email being compromised, according to a Jan. 3 notice from University of Miami. The email account contained the name and medical record numbers of some patients.
The account did not contain Social Security numbers or financial information, according to the health system.
An investigation later determined that the emails containing patient information were forwarded to a third-party email account.
The University of Miami Health System has notified all 973 affected patients and has blocked the intrusion coming from the account.
