Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger will hand over the private patient information for 1 million patients to the defense team for a man accused of breaching patient data in 2023, according to Penn Live.

Last year, the federal government reported around 1.2 million patient information was found on a laptop of a former Nuance Communications employee accused of purposefully accessing the information without authorization. The employee was fired from Nuance, which is owned by Microsoft, and is now awaiting trial.

The defense team agreed to keep the data, which includes patient names, birth dates and addresses, private.

The health systems’ chief privacy officer told Becker’s patient and member privacy was a “top priority” in June 2024 when the news broke, and the health system was working with authorities on the investigation.
