Cyberattacks cost healthcare more than money: Report

Healthcare organizations are under increasing pressure from cyberattacks, with 84% of healthcare IT and security professionals reporting at least one incident in the past year, according to a Jan. 21 survey by cybersecurity firm Netwrix.

The survey collected responses from 1,309 IT and security experts, shedding light on vulnerabilities in the healthcare sector.

Here are three things to know from the survey:

  1. Phishing remains the most common type of cyberattack on healthcare's on-premises systems. However, cloud environments saw a distinct challenge: 74% of healthcare organizations that experienced cyberattacks reported user or admin account compromises.

  2. The financial impact of cyberattacks was significant, affecting 69% of healthcare organizations, compared to 60% across other industries.

  3. Beyond financial damage, one in five healthcare organizations reported severe consequences after cyberattacks, such as changes in senior leadership (21%) or lawsuits (19%).
